ACADEMICS
At Midrand Christian College, we offer a comprehensive academic program that encompasses a wide range of subjects to provide our students with a well-rounded education. Our curriculum is designed to foster critical thinking, creativity, and a passion for learning.
Cambridge Primary
(Ages 5-11)
Focuses on foundational skills in English, Mathematics, and Science. Progression is generally within the school's internal system, often supported by Cambridge Progression Tests.
Cambridge Lower Secondary (Ages 11-14)
Continues building on core subjects. Cambridge Secondary Checkpoint exams (usually at Grade 9 equivalent) provide feedback on strengths and weaknesses and can be used as predictors for IGCSE.
Cambridge Upper SecondarY- IGCSE
(Age 14-16)
IGCSE assessment takes place at the end of the course and can include written, oral, coursework, and practical assessment.
(Equivalent to Grade 10 and 11 in South Africa)
A good performance at IGCSE is crucial for progression to AS and A Levels.
Cambridge Advanced
AS & A Levels
(AGES 16-19)
Represents the first half of a full A Level course and is typically taken in the first year (Grade 11/12 equivalent).
The full A Level qualification, is usually completed in the second year (Grade 13 equivalent). Students can choose to complete AS Level only, or take AS then A Level.

Cambridge and University Exemption in South Africa (Matric Equivalence)
For students aiming to study at South African public universities, Cambridge qualifications need to be converted into a "complete exemption" by the South African Matriculation Board. This is the equivalent of a South African National Senior Certificate (NSC) or "Matric" pass.
The most common pathways and minimum requirements for a complete exemption with Cambridge qualifications are:
-
4 AS Level subjects (minimum grade D) + 1 IGCSE subject (Minimum Grade C). Compulsory subjects include a First language (AS), a second language, a science/mathematics.
-
2 A Level subjects (minimum grade E) + 3 IGCSE subjects (Minimum Grade C) Compulsory subjects include a First language (AS), a second language, a science/mathematics.
